Swaziland candles continue the tradition of floral art. However, Swaziland's talented candle makers use a special hard wax, rather than glass, to create the richly colored designs. The candle's outer shell is made of a hard wax veneer that barely melts when the candle is lit. Therefore, as the candle burns deep into the container and illuminates the outer shell, the illuminated exterior emits a rich and romantic glow. Even if the original inner wax disappears, the outer shell can still be reused after being reinstalled with a wishing candle or tea candle. Miniature candles, due to their smaller size, do not burn in this way; both the inner and outer wax melt with the flame, but they still retain their intrinsic value as Swaziland handicrafts and possess the ethereal, luminous quality that Swaziland candles are renowned for.

The symbol of the hippopotamus

In African culture, hippos symbolize strength, protection, and a balance of deep emotions. Their imposing appearance and incredible power represent a steadfast and composed energy in the face of adversity; their aquatic lifestyle also symbolizes the flow of emotions, intuition, and the inner world. Hippos move freely between water and land, seen as a symbol of stability and resilience throughout life's different stages. Their strong protectiveness of territory and family symbolizes guardianship, security, and responsibility. Despite their assertive nature, hippos also possess a relaxed, life-enjoying side, representing comfort, confidence, and the power to be oneself. In many cultures, hippos are believed to bring courage, inner strength, and emotional stability, making them a symbolic animal embodying both powerful and gentle energy.

These materials ensure that the candle burns cleanly and evenly, transforming a basic necessity into an eco-friendly decorative item. Once lit, the flickering candlelight creates a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere.

Art and Color Creation

The wax is first stained in a large tray and then cooled into sheets. These sheets are then cut into strips and layered to form the desired pattern. The layered strips are then extruded to provide patterns with intricate details and then cut into usable veneers.

Finally, our artisans heat the veneers and skillfully hand-carve them into beautiful animal or geometric shapes.

Each candle is crafted using the ancient Milerfiori technique, featuring stunning designs that are then hand-shaped. This meticulous process makes each candle a unique work of art.
